Brazilian is the club’s top goalscorer so far this season, with six goals in 12 appearances

Real Betis winger Antony has issued an apology on social media after being sent off in in stoppage time of Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Girona.

The suspension means he will be unavailable for the club’s derby against Sevilla at the weekend.

Antony was shown a straight red after attempting an overhead control inside the Girona box. He missed the ball entirely, and his boot instead struck Joel Roca in the face. The referee initially awarded him a yellow card, but VAR advised a review and the decision was moved up to red.

The Brazilian wrote on Instagram: “Very sad about the red card. All I wanted was to help my team win. A completely unintentional move… sorry to all the fans that have always supported me.”

Betis are fifth in La Liga but have Espanyol, Getafe, Athletic Club and also Sevilla breathing down their necks.

Captain Isco returned from injury at the weekend, which is a huge boost for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, but losing Antony for the trip to Sevilla will hurt deeply. The Brazilian is their top goalscorer so far this season, with six goals in 12 appearances in all competitions.
