The Real Madrid manager says his team will “try and try” to win showdown against Barcelona, with Mbappe and Guler set to play key roles

Carlo Ancelotti has set the tone for one of the most anticipated El Clasico showdowns in recent memory, declaring Sunday’s clash against Barcelona “an almost decisive match” in the La Liga title race.

With just four points separating the two Spanish giants, the Real Madrid boss said that the game presents a chance for Real Madrid to crash into their rivals as they speed towards the title.

“Yes, we will have a great opportunity,” said Ancelotti ahead of the Bernabeu blockbuster. “We have to prepare well. It’s an almost decisive match.”

A win would cut Barcelona’s lead to just a single point, and although Madrid would still be playing catch-up in that scenario, Ancelotti is keenly aware of what is at stake. “If we win, we have a point disadvantage,” he said, “but we will have more chances if we are able to win.”

Reflecting on the teams’ recent encounter in the Copa del Rey, a dramatic final where Barcelona won 3-2 in extra time to claim the trophy, Ancelotti noted that his side don’t need a radical rethink: “We played a week ago and it was competitive, we were close to winning. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

“The match has to be serious, very important and we are going to try and try. Despite everything, we can fight this match. It’s a beautiful thing.”

All eyes will be on Kylian Mbappe, who came on in the second half of that Copa del Rey final to score and turn Madrid’s fortunes around – albeit temporarily. The France international is also chasing both a debut-season Pichichi Trophy and a potential La Liga crown.

His pace and positioning, according to Ancelotti, could be crucial against Barcelona’s infamous high defensive line under Hansi Flick.

“The fact that the defensive line is high up, his movements will be important and decisive,” said the 65-year-old head coach. “If he does, the better it is for us.”

There could also be a big moment for Arda Guler, who has been praised by his manager for his maturity. The 20-year-old has been growing in confidence and form, and Ancelotti didn’t rule out a start.

“He can play, that’s true,” said Ancelotti. “He will compete to be in the starting 11. There is no doubt about that.”
