Manager says his side “paid the price” for losing control of the game a few minutes
Ruben Amorim said Manchester United’s response to falling behind to Nottingham Forest in the second half at City Ground showed how far his side has come in recent months.
The manager said it was a game they would have lost last season.
United appeared to be heading for defeat at the City Ground after two quickfire goals early in the second half turned the match on its head, but Amad Diallo’s late volley salvaged a point and extended their unbeaten run to four matches in all competitions.
Casemiro had given United a first-half lead from a controversial corner before goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Nicolo Savona put Forest ahead.
But Amorim praised his team’s spirit in fighting back from a poor spell that might once have led to a loss.
“We lost control of the game for five minutes and we paid a price,” said Amorim. “I think we did some things well, but our level of energy dropped a little bit. When our team drops a little bit, you can feel it.
United started the game well, even if less intensely than in their previous three, but going ahead appeared to have induced lethargy.
“In the past, if we had this kind of bad five minutes and we suffered two goals, we didn’t recover,” said Amorim. “Today is a different feeling. You can sense that we could not win this game, but we are not going to lose. That is a feeling that a big team sometimes has to have.”
