Manager admits his side were “not prepared” to play strong games on multiple fronts
Ruben Amorim believes Manchester United’s absence from European competition could help accelerate the team’s rebuild after last year’s disappointing campaign.
United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, their lowest position in the top flight since 1974, and also missed out on Champions League qualification after losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
The club is now set to go through the season without European football for the first time in a decade.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag midway through last season, insists that a reduced schedule will give his squad the breathing space they need to adapt to his ideas.
“We were not prepared to play in Europe,” said Amorim. “That is my feeling. To have strong games in Europe and play in the Premier League we need time to develop as a team.
“I said last season we need time to prepare for every game. The games are really competitive and we need to build to our base and then, in the future, to move forward.
“And we’ll reach one moment where we need to have Europe for everybody to play games.”
