Head coach hails Cunha and Mbeumo for impact on debut
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has hailed his side for “a completely different game from last season” but warned they need to win games.
United lost 1-0 to Arsenal in their high-profile Premier League opener at Old Trafford on Sunday.
United were the better team for long spells against Arsenal, racking up over 60 per cent possession and creating far more chances. Summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo all came close while Patrick Dorgu hit the post in the first half with a fierce strike.
Amorim said: “I’m really proud of the guys. They were brave in everything they did. Congratulations for the performance but not for the game. We lost the game at home but I believe we clearly deserved a different result.”
Asked what he observed was different in his side compared to last season, United’s manager said: “We were more aggressive than last year. We sprinted more. We were braver. We pressed high.
“And with the ball we had quality. We lost fewer balls in the build up compared to last year. Last year we struggled a lot.”
On Cunha and Mbeumo’s performance, Amorim said: “You always feel in the game that they can do something, that they can push the team, not just with the ball but without the ball. They press really well.
Again I’m proud, but we lost, so we need to work on different things.”
