“I Want to Stay 20 Years”: Amorim Eyes Long-Term Future at Manchester United

Head coach says he has “no doubts” the club will soon return to the top

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said he wants to remain at the club for two decades and believes it is only a matter of time before they return to the top of English and European football.

Amorim oversaw United’s worst finish in the top-flight since 1974, and the manager himself suggested that if poor results were to continue next season he would be sacked.

No United manager has lasted more than three years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Amorim said: “I want to stay, I want to stay 20 years. That is my goal and I truly believe in that. Something will happen. It always does.

“In some moments I will be lucky. I had a lot of luck during my career as a manager and my idea is to stay for many years. But again we know that the results will dictate that. I know that last season I used all the credits but I’m ready to start fresh.”

The disastrous campaign was somewhat mitigated by the sense that Amorim only inherited those problems. He met a club in freefall, with significant issues both on and off the pitch, and he had no pre-season to train his squad.

United have made some investment in the squad this summer as Amorim targets a rebuild. They have brought in Premier League-proven forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, and the 18-year-old Diego Leon.

The club have not won the Premier League in over a decade and last lifted the Champions League in 2008. But Amorim insists a return to glory is both near and inevitable.

“I have no doubts because there are some things you cannot buy that this club has,” said Amorim. “The pedigree, the history, the fans. We have that. I think that is clear.

“Then the money. We have money. We have money without the Champions League. So we can, we’ll have money and more money in the future. And we are doing everything.

“You talk with Omar [Berrada, the CEO] and all these guys, they are making all the strategy to have more money in the future. So that will not be a problem.

“And then I think it’s clearly the culture. If we have a different culture, with all that, with all the pedigree, the money, all these things, we can return to our place. And that is clear.”
