Slovenia international is United’s third major signing of the transfer window

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has explained why the club were so keen to bring Benjamin Sesko to Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old striker joined United from RB Leipzig this week for a fee rising to £74m, signing a contract until 2030.

United’s head coach said Sesko’s profile ticked several important boxes for the squad he is building.

“He has the characteristics we needed,” Amorim said “He’s good in the air, he’s good at running the channels, good on the ball. I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot and, for sure, he is going to feel at home in our club.”

Amorim also pointed to the forward’s attitude as a key factor in the decision.

The Portuguese said: “He has the right character to be in this group so I’m really happy to have him.”

Sesko is United’s third major signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. United open their Premier League season against Arsenal next weekend, with Sesko expected to be in the matchday squad.

Amorim said the Slovenia international will benefit from United’s improved £50m training facilities at Carrington but stressed that performances on the pitch remain the priority.

“He is going to notice, since the first day and first training, that he is in the right place,” said Amorim.

“He is going to a new building [at Carrington], that is also important. Things are getting better but, in the end, we need to win games.”
