Manager admits disappointment and frustration after shocking loss but insists he remains “focused”
Ruben Amorim has admitted he let frustration spill over in the aftermath of Manchester United’s shock League Cup exit to Grimsby Town, but says his focus is now firmly on Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Burnley.
The United manager was visibly angry after his side were beaten on penalties by the League Two club on Wednesday, describing the performance as a “loud” message from his players and insisting that “something has to change”.
The comments raised uncertainty about the future of the Portuguese coach, who has endured an abysmal start since replacing Erik ten Hag in November of last year.
“In that moment, I was so frustrated and annoyed,” said Amorim. “Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years, sometimes I love to be with my players, sometimes I don’t want to be with them.
“In that moment I was really upset and really disappointed because I felt that we had a very good preseason. We were playing better, we were being consistent in the way we played.”
The defeat at Blundell Park is the latest in a string of setbacks for Amorim at the start of the new season, despite encouraging performances in pre-season and flashes of improvement in the league against Arsenal and in the opening 15 minutes against Fulham.
The Red Devils lost that opening game against the Gunners and were lucky to get away with a draw at Craven Cottage.
However, Amorim insisted that despite his disappointment on Wednesday he is ready to turn around the club’s fortunes in the next match against Burnley on Saturday, saying it’s “a new game” and he remains “focused”.
