Winger confident the club’s former midfielder can restore United to “where they belong”
Manchester United players believe Michael Carrick should be appointed as the club’s permanent head coach, according to winger Amad Diallo.
Carrick took charge in January on an interim basis and has overseen a strong run of form, losing just one of his first 10 matches.
The improvement has lifted United to third place in the Premier League and put them on track for a return to the Champions League. United now only need a maximum of four wins in seven games to seal their return to Europe’s elite competition.
Amad, who has travelled with the rest of United’s squad to their one-week training camp in Dublin, said the squad has been impressed by Carrick’s impact but acknowledged the final decision rests with the club’s leadership.
“Obviously it’s not for us as a player to decide his future, but he’s been very good, he’s been doing so much for the team,” Amad said. “He has a lot of experience, he knows the club and has the DNA. We think he’s the right man.
“He knows the club, he played for the club, so he has great experience to manage this club. Sometimes this kind of manager can bring a club where they belong.
“From my personal side he’s the right man but it’s not the players who decide, but we are really happy to have him as a manager.”
United are engaging in an intense training in Ireland this week in preparation for the Premier League run-in. The club have not played since their 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on 20 March. Their next league fixture is against Leeds United on 13 April.
Finishing third will boost Carrick’s case for gaining the coaching role on a permanent basis. The final decision will be made at the end of the season by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.
“I think the club will decide at the end of the season,” Amad said. “My honest opinion is we’re really happy to have him as a manager and he’s doing well.
“Since he’s arrived he’s been clear to everyone that he wants to win, he wants to reach the Champions League next season. He’s been doing really well and we’re really happy to have him as the manager.”
