Real Madrid manager insists forward’s reaction is “normal”

Xabi Alonso has moved to defuse any tension after Vinicius Junior reacted angrily to being substituted in Real Madrid’s 2-0 win against Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

The Brazil forward was taken off in the 77th minute after an impressive performance. He showed his displeasure as he left the field, throwing a water bottle to the ground and gesturing in frustration.

Alonso tried to explain the player’s reaction.

“We took him off when he was doing well,” said Madrid’s manager. “Perhaps we could have waited a bit longer, but I wanted fresh legs out wide.

“Franco [Mastantuono] wanted to carry on playing too. He asked if I was taking him off and I said yes. Something similar happened with Vini.”

All four of Madrid’s forwards were subbed off. Gonzalo Garcia was replaced by Arda Guler just after the hour, before Vinicius and Mastantuono were taken off for Rodrygo and Brahim Diaz respectively in the 77th minute.

Mbappe came off with 11 minutes to go, replaced by the returning Jude Bellingham.

“Vinicius reaction is normal,” said Alonso. “Franco went off a bit angry too. In the end, it happens with everyone.

“I’m happy with the game Vini had, and the game Franco had too, you need fresh legs sometimes, and the calendar is demanding.
