Senior club figures have held talks over his future but the head coach rejected claims that confidence inside the squad has eroded

Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has insisted he still has the backing of his squad despite concerns over poor results and discontent in the dressing room.

Madrid are in their poorest run of form since Alonso took over at the club. They have won only once in five league games, and the flat 2-0 home loss to Celta Vigo led to internal discussions over the Spaniard’s future.

Club president Florentino Perez held talks with senior board members after the defeat, with concerns raised about performances and Alonso’s management of the dressing room.

Alonso rejected the idea that confidence inside the squad has eroded and insisted he still feels supported by the players.

“The team is united, the team is convinced,” said Madrid’s coach. “Everyone is convinced we can win tomorrow [against Manchester City]. Nobody has doubts. But for that, we have to play with a good rhythm, intensity, and compete.”

Madrid’s dip has seen them slip four points behind league leaders Barcelona, despite having a five-point lead at the top of La Liga just over a month ago.

“As Real Madrid coach you have to be ready to deal with these situations with calm,” said Alonso. “That’s how I feel. I’m excited about what’s next, starting tomorrow, after the anger there was [after Celta], which is normal.

“Now we’re thinking about City, the Champions League. Things can change quickly in football.”

Alonso also responded to concerns about how he has been managing the squad, amid rumours of discontent in the dressing room.

“I know the culture at Real Madrid, that’s why it’s the biggest job in the world,” said Alonso. “You need to adapt, you need to learn. There’s a process, an interaction with the players. Some days are good, some days are not so good.”
