Forward has scored 15 goals in 11 appearances so far this term
Xabi Alonso says Kylian Mbappe’s impact at Real Madrid has gone far beyond his goals, with the French forward in electric form ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Juventus at the Bernabeu.
Mbappe has made a blistering start to his second season in Spain, leading both the La Liga and Champions League scoring charts. He has struck 10 goals in nine league appearances and five in two games in Europe, with another three for France during the international break.
“It’s not just the goals,” said Alonso. “His influence is almost as important in terms of his teammates following him with and without the ball. He’s helping us. He’s scored goals everywhere. The influence, as well as the goals, is what the team needs.”
Mbappe was impressive as well last season, ending the campaign with 44 goals to win the Pichichi Trophy and European golden boot in his first season at the club.
This season he is even better and his goals have led Madrid to 10 wins out of 11 in all competitions so far. Alonso warned his side to be ready for a tough test against Juventus despite their current form.
In contrast to Madrid, the Old Lady have won only three of their seven league games and drawn both Champions League matches they’ve played this season.
“Any Italian team that’s struggling can be dangerous,” said Alonso. “We must not forget history. Juve are a big club, both now and in the past. They have some very good players.
“It’s a European classic. They have faced each other many times, and I’ve played in some of those games. We feel very prepared. We want our third Champions League victory and to get off to a great start.”
