AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri insists Inter remain the clear favourites to win the Serie A title despite Milan’s 1-0 derby victory that cut the gap to seven points.
Massimiliano Allegri has downplayed AC Milan’s chances of challenging for the Serie A title despite their 1-0 victory over city rivals Inter Milan in the Derby della Madonnina. The win reduced the gap at the top of the table to seven points but Allegri insists Inter remain the favourites for the Scudetto.
The decisive moment at the San Siro came in the 35th minute when Pervis Estupiñán scored the only goal of the match. The victory allowed Milan to complete their first league double over Inter since the 2010/11 season, which coincidentally came during Allegri’s first spell in charge of the club.
AC Milan’s triumph also marked their third consecutive win against Inter across all competitions, something they had not achieved since the period between November 2010 and August 2011. The result moved the Rossoneri to 60 points after 28 Serie A matches, a milestone they have reached only four times since the 2009/10 campaign.
Despite the momentum created by the derby victory, many still believe that Inter are the leading favourite to take the Serie A trophy.
Allegri echoed that assessment when speaking after the match, acknowledging Inter’s strong position in the title race. He emphasised that a seven-point advantage is significant and maintained that Inter remain both the strongest team in the league and the clear favourites to win the championship.
The AC Milan coach also reiterated that the club’s primary objective this season has been securing qualification for the Champions League rather than chasing the title. With several key rivals still within reach in the standings, he stressed the importance of continuing to collect points.
Although AC Milan ultimately secured all three points, the match was closely contested. Inter created several dangerous opportunities after the break, including a missed chance from Federico Dimarco, but Allegri felt his team managed the pressure well enough to earn a morale-boosting victory.
