Booing at Anfield did not change my feelings, right-back says

Trent Alexander-Arnold insists his affection for Liverpool “won’t change” as he prepares to return to Anfield for the first time since leaving for Real Madrid in the summer.

The 27-year-old right-back is expected to travel with Xabi Alonso’s squad for Tuesday night’s Champions League meeting between the two clubs, which would be his first return to Anfield only months after a high-profile and divisive transfer.

Alexander-Arnold has been out for weeks with a hamstring injury that but should be fit enough to feature on Tuesday.

“When the draw was announced, I think everyone kind of knew it was going to happen,” said Alexander-Arnold. “It was destined for that fixture to come.

“Obviously, they’re a top team, so I knew at some point I’d end up going back there or playing against Liverpool.

“It’s happening so soon. Mixed emotions. I think it’ll be a very, very difficult game but one that I’m excited for.”

The England international’s move to Madrid ended a 19-year stay at Liverpool, where he rose through the academy ranks to become one of the club’s most decorated homegrown players of the modern era.

But his departure divided opinion after he left practically on a free transfer, and some supporters booed him in one of his last appearances at Anfield.

But that does not in any way affect Alexander-Arnold’s feelings towards his boyhood club.

“Whatever way I’m received is the decision of the fans,” said Alexander-Arnold. “I’ll always love the club, I’ll always be a fan of the club.

“I’ll always be thankful for the opportunities and the things we achieved together. They’ll live with me forever.

“No matter what, my feelings won’t change towards Liverpool. I’ve got memories there that will last me a lifetime and, no matter how I’m received, that won’t change.”
