Medical tests confirmed a muscle injury in the right-back’s left leg

Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to be out for six to eight weeks after suffering a hamstring injury during the club’s Champions League victory over Marseille on Tuesday night.

The 26-year-old right-back went down and was substituted just five minutes into the game at the Bernabeu, with Dani Carvajal coming on in his place.

Carvajal was later sent off for headbutting Marseille’s goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, although Madrid still came from behind to secure a 2-1 win in their opening group fixture.

Medical tests on Wednesday confirmed a muscle injury to the biceps femoris in Alexander-Arnold’s left leg, according to the club’s statement. Madrid did not provide a specific recovery timeline but said further updates would be given in due course.

The injury is expected to keep the former Liverpool defender out for up to two months, ruling him out of the Madrid derby against Atletico later this month and making him a major doubt for the first clásico of the season against Barcelona on 26 October.

The setback also means Alexander-Arnold is likely to miss his scheduled return to Anfield with Real Madrid on 4 November, which would have been a spicy occasion after leaving Liverpool last summer to mixed reactions.
