Manager Simone Inzaghi sees Nunez as an ideal fit for his system

Saudi Pro League champions Al-Hilal have made Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez their priority signing.

Al-Hilal are in the market for a marquee striker but moves for Victor Osimhen and Alexander Isak have fallen through.

The former has permanently joined Galatasaray while the latter is the subject of a £110m bid from Liverpool and is highly unlikely to leave Europe at this time.

Internal discussions at Al-Hilal have now turned towards Nunez, according to The Athletic.

Liverpool are yet to receive an official bid, but the Saudi club have made their interest clear. Al-Hilal had initially contacted the Reds in June to understand how a potential deal would work, having previously made inquiries through intermediaries in January, when their Saudi Pro League rivals Al Nassr expressed similar interest.

Head coach Simone Inzaghi is believed to be a strong admirer of Nunez’s physicality and movement, seeing him as an ideal fit for his system.

Nunez is not actively seeking a move away from Liverpool but is understood to be open to exploring the project.

The Uruguay international joined Liverpool from Benfica in the summer of 2022, in a deal worth around €100m, but he has failed to click into gear at Anfield.

Last season he made 47 appearances in all competitions, many of them as a substitute, and managed just seven goals.

Liverpool have already signed Nunez’s potential replacement, Hugo Ekitike, from Eintracht Frankfurt. Their high-value bid for Isak has also increased speculation that Nunez could be leaving Anfield.
