The visitors started brightly, with Ardian Ismajli’s header expertly tipped over the bar by AC Milan captain Mike Maignan.
However, AC Milan woke up just before halftime, with Adrien Rabiot’s rapid strike forcing Alberto Paleari into action. The hosts took the lead just moments later, thanks to Strahinja Pavlovic’s sublime 25-yard strike that went in off the underside of the bar.
Torino refused to give up, and they deservedly levelled the game on the stroke of halftime. Nikola Vlasic’s 20-yard effort was tipped onto the post by Maignan, before the ball ricocheted back off the France international and into the path of Giovanni Simeone, who tucked away the rebound.
Massimiliano Allegri’s half-time team talk must have been an inspirational one, as Milan came out fighting straight from the restart. Rabiot scored his second goal of the game, meeting Christian Pulisic’s pass across the face of goal to turn the ball in from six yards.
The lead was extended just moments later, with Youssouf Fofana scoring after Torino’s static defending allowed him to go for goal. Paleari got a glove to the ball, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Milan from extending their advantage.
Torino pushed for a comeback, and they came agonisingly close to reducing the deficit midway through the second half. Maignan pulled off an impressive reflex save to stop Simeone from claiming his second goal of the night.
Drama struck with 10 minutes remaining, as Torino was awarded a penalty following VAR intervention. Vlasic stepped up to take the spot-kick and made no mistake, finding the top corner and setting up a grandstand finale. AC Milan held on to claim three precious points.
AC Milan are now up to second in Serie A and will be desperate to record back-to-back victories after the international break when they take on third-placed Napoli away from home.
