Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala confirms AC Milan and Inter Milan have reached an agreement to purchase the San Siro area, pending City Council approval.

AC Milan and Inter Milan have taken a significant step towards owning the iconic San Siro Stadium, with Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala confirming that both clubs have reached an agreement to purchase the area.

The deal, however, still requires approval from the City Council. According to Sala, the proposal will be submitted to the council on Wednesday, and a decision is expected by the end of the month.

The new stadium project is driven by UEFA’s requirement that Milan must have a modern stadium to host matches during the 2032 European Championship. Sala emphasised that the stadium must be ready by 2031 to meet UEFA’s deadline. Failure to comply would mean Milan wouldn’t be considered as a host city for the tournament. This urgency underscores the importance of the City Council’s decision.

The proposed sale of San Siro includes the Stadio Meazza and surrounding land. Once the agreement is approved, the clubs plan to build a state-of-the-art stadium. The project involves constructing a new arena with a potential capacity of over 70,000 seats. The current stadium would be demolished after the new one is built.

Mayor Sala expressed his support for the sale, stating he will vote in favour of the resolution. However, the final decision rests with the City Council. The council will review the proposal, hold committee discussions, and then decide whether to approve or reject the sale. Sala aims to ensure a transparent review process, bringing the resolution to the council to support its approval.

The potential sale price of San Siro is around €197 million, with the City Council contributing €22 million towards reclamation and demolition costs. This contribution will be deducted from the sale price. The two clubs will cover the remaining costs, including an additional €14 million for partial demolition and conversion of the current stadium.
