Club’s interest in signing a goalkeeper escalated after both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana made errors that cost their side dearly
Manchester United are set to sign Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens after agreeing a fee of €25m.
The club will pay an initial €21m and another €4m in add-ons. The 23-year-old has travelled to Manchester to complete the move and will sign a five-year contract.
Lammens joined Antwerp from Club Brugge in 2023 and quickly established himself as first-choice. He has been called up to Belgium’s squad a few times but is yet to earn a senior international cap.
United’s interest in signing a goalkeeper escalated after both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana made errors that cost their side dearly in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup respectively.
Altay Bayindir has started United’s Premier League fixtures so far after having got the nod due to a hamstring injury that caused Onana to miss pre-season. However, the Turkish goalkeeper has been unconvincing, making mistakes leading to goals against Arsenal and Burnley, and being a target in corner kicks in all three of United’s games.
United’s first choice last season, Onana, is hardly better, having made a series of high-profile errors last season and followed them up with two big ones in a humiliating defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup last week.
Veteran Tom Heaton remains in the squad but has not played in a competitive match for two seasons.
United had also explored a move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, but ultimately settled on the younger and cheaper Lammens.
