“We need those guys really badly to be really competitive,” says Ruben Amorim

Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha has been withdrawn from Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the upcoming international fixtures, following an injury sustained at the weekend, the Brazilian FA has confirmed.

Atletico Madrid’s Samuel Lino has been called up in Cunha’s place after consultation between United’s medical staff and Brazil’s doctors.

United are facing an anxious wait over the player’s fitness. Ruben Amorim’s side secured their first victory of the season with the 3-2 win against Burnley but Cunha was forced off in the first half.

The Brazilian, who joined from Wolves this summer, lasted just 27 minutes before signalling to the bench with what appeared to be a hamstring problem. He went straight down the tunnel after being replaced.

Mason Mount also failed to complete the game, coming off at half-time. Amorim said afterwards that the midfielder had been carrying an issue even before the break.

“It was hard to lose Cunha and Mason, because Mason played 30 minutes with an injury,” said Amorim. “I’m concerned about that because they are so important for us. We’ll see how they are.

“I don’t know yet. We will check them. We need those guys really badly to be really competitive.”

United will have the international break to assess both players and hope they can recover in time for the restart.
