Sources at London club say move will not depend on the departures of Nkunku and Jackson

Manchester United and Chelsea are hammering out a deal for winger Alejandro Garnacho to join the London club, with the transfer expected to be finalised for a fee in the region of £35-40m.

United had initially valued the 21-year-old at £50m but are understood to be willing to compromise as they look to move on several players who have been deemed surplus to requirements by new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Garnacho has not featured for United since the end of last season and was left out of their pre-season tour of the United States.

Instead, he trained in a separate group alongside Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, all of whom were told they could leave this summer. Rashford has since joined Barcelona on loan, but United have struggled to move on the others.

Chelsea have tracked Garnacho since the January window and view him as a player who fits Enzo Maresca’s project.

The club’s pursuit this summer had been slowed by the need to manage outgoings in order to comply with Uefa’s financial regulations.

Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson are among those the club had reportedly been looking to move on to make the finances work, but sources close to the club have said a move for Garnacho will not depend on their departures being finalised.
