Manchester United’s boss has been criticised for his steadfast use of the formation

Patrick Dorgu has defended Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim’s use of the 3-4-3 system, insisting the formation is very flexible.

Amorim has steadfastly maintained the use of the system since his appointment, saying he will stick by the formation no matter what. In the 1-1 draw against Fulham on Sunday, the 20-time Premier League champions were overrun in midfield in no small part because of the numerical disadvantage the system creates in midfield.

But Dorgu, who joined Amorim’s team from Lecce in February for £25m, believes the setup is less rigid than many assume.

“It depends what system you’re playing against,” said Dorgu. “You can always drop alongside the centre-backs to make it a 4-3-3.

“It’s about adapting to who you’re playing against and helping each other, moving for each other, and then it’s not really about the system. It’s more like how you’re dealing with it.”

The Denmark international also claimed that in-game adjustments are possible for the players in Amorim’s approach.

Dorgu said: It’s up to you how you want to play. If the midfielders feel like they’re getting man-marked, then they can move down, get the ball, and play. You need to move.

“Obviously, you’re not just going to move around. I can’t just run to the right side, but you can move in your position.”
