Wayne Rooney believes Arsenal’s teenage sensation Max Dowman is destined for a ‘massive future’ after his impressive Premier League debut at just 15 years old.

Wayne Rooney, the Manchester United great and former England captain, has tipped Arsenal’s Max Dowman for a “massive future” following his impressive Premier League debut. Dowman, who came on as a substitute in Arsenal’s 5-0 win over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium, showcased his talent by earning a late penalty that led to Viktor Gyokeres scoring from the spot.

The 15-year-old’s performance has drawn comparisons to other young talents in the sport, with Rooney praising his potential on his BBC podcast, the Wayne Rooney Show. “To play at that age in the Premier League is crazy,” Rooney said. “I know I played when I was young, but I think he’s like 150 days younger than I was, or more.”

Rooney believes Dowman’s family and friends are likely living in a “dream and a fairytale” as they bask in the glory of his achievement. However, he emphasizes that the young player needs to be prepared for the pressures that come with playing top-flight football at such an early age. “It’s surreal,” Rooney added.

“It’s so strange that one minute you’re in the youth team and the next you’re in the first-team dressing room with some of your heroes.”

Dowman’s debut has sparked widespread interest, with many pundits and fans praising his talent. Rooney noted that “everyone you speak to in football, the same name keeps coming back: Max Dowman.” The teenager’s level-headedness, according to Rooney, will be crucial in navigating the challenges ahead.

As Dowman continues to make a name for himself in the Premier League, he follows in the footsteps of his teammate Ethan Nwaneri, who remains the youngest player in Premier League history. Nwaneri featured in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory at Brentford in September 2022 aged 15 years and 181 days.

With Rooney’s endorsement and the football world’s attention on him, Dowman is poised to have a bright future ahead of him. His ability to handle the pressures of top-flight football will be key to his success. As Rooney aptly put it, “Max Dowman looks like a very level-headed lad from everything I’ve seen, and you hope he manages to deal with it and understands what’s coming his way very soon.”
