Tottenham’s 2-0 victory at Manchester City on Saturday means Thomas Frank has become one of the few managers to have beaten Pep Guardiola away from home with two different clubs.
Only two managers had previously achieved the feat: Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, and notably, they are both ex-Tottenham managers – although Mourinho achieved the feat with Real Madrid and Manchester United rather than Tottenham. Conte managed it with Chelsea and Tottenham.
Goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha secured three points for Frank’s side at the Etihad on Saturday, continuing their strong start under the Dane.
Frank’s first victory over Guardiola was with Brentford, when his side won 2-1 to become the only team to beat the Sky Blues at home in the 2022-23 season.
City’s defeat to Tottenham marked their eighth in the last 15 meetings against the north London club, and Spurs also became the first team to score the opening goal in five consecutive Premier League away games at the Etihad.
Only Blackburn Rovers, between 1993 and 2002, had previously managed a similar record against City in the top flight.
