Liverpool manager insists he is content with the squad at his disposal
Arne Slot has said he does not expect a late rush from Liverpool near the end of the transfer window, despite gaps in his squad.
Liverpool have already spent over £300m on new players this summer, including Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt and their latest signing, teenage defender Giovanni Leoni.
But the sales of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Jarell Quansah have also left the Premier League champions lighter than expected in both attack and defence.
Defence in particular has been a source of much scrutiny after Liverpool proved vulnerable to both Crystal Palace and Bournemouth in their first two competitive games of the new season.
However, Slot insists he is content with the players at his disposal.
“I’m very happy with the squad we have,” said Liverpool’s manager. “Two per position is ideal but I prefer less than more, because you have to disappoint so many players every single time.
“If we think we can improve in a certain position and there is a player available that can really make us better like with Giovanni Leoni, then this club has always shown they will bring these players in. But only if they are everything we want.”
Liverpool have been linked with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi to reinforce their forward and defence line, but Slot refused to address targets, saying it is “much nicer to talk about the players we have”.
The Dutchman will be without Jeremie Frimpong for two league matches, after the right-back sustained an injury ruling him out until the end of the international break.
However, Slot’s alternative at right-back, Conor Bradley, has returned to training and could be available.
