Borussia Dortmund secured a 1-0 win over third-division club Rot-Weiss Essen in the German Cup, thanks to Serhou Guirassy’s goal in the 79th minute.

Borussia Dortmund began their German Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rot-Weiss Essen.

The match was a test of Dortmund’s resolve, as they faced a disciplined Essen backline that worked tirelessly to nullify their chances. Despite their best efforts, Essen’s defensive unit was finally breached by Serhou Guirassy’s clinical finish in the 79th minute.

Guirassy picked up the ball on the edge of the box, battled with two Essen defenders, and unleashed a low, unstoppable drive past the keeper. The goal sent Dortmund’s fans into raptures and sealed the win for the visitors.

Essen had their chances to take the lead, with Romien Safi testing Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel’s reflexes in the 41st minute. Kobel denied Safi from close range, and the hosts continued to push for a goal. However, Dortmund’s defense held firm, and Guirassy’s goal proved to be the difference-maker.

The win sets Dortmund up for a busy schedule, with their next match being a Bundesliga encounter against St Pauli on Saturday. Despite Essen’s late pressure, Dortmund managed to hold on to their slim lead and advance to the second round of the German Cup.

In a minor setback for Dortmund, defender Yan Couto suffered an injury in second-half stoppage time after a rough challenge from Kelsey Owusu. The extent of the injury is not yet clear, but it could potentially impact Dortmund’s upcoming fixtures.

Overall, Dortmund’s 1-0 win over Essen was a welcome start to their season. With the German Cup and Bundesliga fixtures on the horizon, the team will be looking to build on this momentum and achieve success in the coming weeks.
