The “exemplary” efforts of both the club’s and local medical teams were unable to prevent the tragedy, the club said

A Brighton supporter has died after suffering a medical emergency during the club’s 1-1 draw with Fulham at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

The 72-year-old man became unwell in the upper tier of the stadium’s east stand during the second half of the match. Local medical teams and the club’s own staff responded immediately, carrying out prolonged CPR and using a defibrillator.

Privacy screens were placed around the man as treatment continued, but despite efforts on the scene he was later pronounced dead.

Brighton confirmed the news shortly afterwards and offered condolences to the man’s family.

“This was an incredibly sad end to the match this afternoon, and our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family and friends of the gentleman who lost his life,” the club’s chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber said.

“While the gentleman concerned is foremost in our minds, we are also aware that it was an emotional and distressing situation for staff and supporters in the direct vicinity. Over the coming days we will ensure those affected are properly supported.”

Club doctor and emergency medicine consultant, Dr Rob Galloway, called the situation “a tragic outcome” that happened despite “exemplary” medical care that the medical team strived to provide.
