Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager, Thomas Frank, has appointed Cristian Romero as the team’s new captain, succeeding Son Heung-min, who departed to LAFC.
Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager, Thomas Frank, has made his first major decision as the team’s boss by appointing Cristian Romero as the new captain. Romero succeeds Son Heung-min, who left the club to join LAFC this summer.
The announcement was made ahead of the UEFA Super Cup match against Paris Saint-Germain at Stadio Friuli in Udine.
Romero, a 27-year-old Argentine center-back, joined Tottenham Hotspur from Atalanta in the summer of 2021 after being named Serie A’s Best Defender for the 2020/21 season.
Since then, he has made 100 appearances in all competitions for the club. His partnership with Micky van de Ven in central defense was instrumental in Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League success last season.
Frank explained that he had a good conversation with Romero about the leadership role, saying, “I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behavior on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way, and outside the pitch, he’s always pushing the team.” Romero was previously vice-captain alongside James Maddison and took over the armband on a full-time basis after Son’s departure.
The new captain expressed his pride and honor in taking on the role, stating, “Today begins a new season for us, one that is truly special to me. Becoming the first captain of this beautiful club is an incredible honor.”
Frank plans to name a wider leadership group after the close of the summer transfer window, emphasizing the importance of having multiple leaders on the team. “I would like to have as many leaders as possible who can help, because it’s the same with me, I can’t do everything on my own and need a superb coaching staff around me,” he said.
With Romero at the helm, Tottenham Hotspur will face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, looking to add to their European silverware. The match promises to be an exciting encounter between two top European teams.
