Club president Joan Laporta hoping for “good news” regarding registrations
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has admitted the club may be unable to register Marcus Rashford in time for the club’s La Liga opener against Mallorca.
Laporta told TV3 the club now have “the option of registering Joan Garcia” after resolving their standoff with captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but that they were still “working on the rest”.
Barcelona have reached their salary limits set by La Liga’s financial rules, so they need to free up salary space to register new signings – or contract renewals as with Wojciech Szczesny.
Ter Stegen’s injury, which will require him to be out for months, provided the club with some leeway for registrations. The league’s rules permit clubs to use the salary space of players out for up to four months to register new signings.
The goalkeeper’s reluctance to go ahead with this was the cause of a disagreement which saw him temporarily stripped of the captaincy, although this has now been resolved.
While Garcia can now be registered, Rashford, who joined on loan from Manchester United, is still waiting for clearance, alongside Szczesny, Gerard Martin, and newly signed youngster Roony Bardghji.
Laporta said: “This week we’ll have news, hopefully good news, to see if we can register them before La Liga starts. And if we can’t, we have time.”
