Team leaders to help enforce more discipline in the squad
Manchester United have a new leadership group in the dressing room as head coach Ruben Amorim is keen on driving a change of culture.
The six-man group named by Amorim will be expected to take on more responsibility for the squad’s discipline and standards.
Bruno Fernandes, who remains club captain, is joined by Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Tom Heaton and Noussair Mazraoui.
Amorim said the group would be expected to small issues within the squad and help enforce a new set of rules that include more discipline and stricter expectations in training.
“There are some things that in the last year I had to deal with it,” said Amorim. “I said to the players this year, you deal with that. Small issues are with you guys. You are responsible. All these small changes, I think it’s helping the group.
“We have Bruno, we have Licha [Martinez], we have Harry, we have Diogo, we have Tom and we have Nous [Mazraoui]. So it’s not just the oldest one.
“Nous is in the group because he’s a character that I like. And I try to understand the dynamic of the group. Try to reach every space. They are the guys that are responsible to keep everyone in line.”
With United not competing in European competition this season, Amorim wants a small, tight-knit squad that will remain focused throughout the season.
“I want a small squad so everyone feels really important,” said Amorim. “If you have a lot of players, you have one week to prepare and a lot of players are going to be out, and then in training they will be frustrated and then the quality of the training will drop.”
