Midfielder says Los Blancos should be unsettled after Barcelona beat them four out of four last season

Barcelona midfielder Gavi has said Real Madrid should be concerned about their ability to compete with their fierce rivals going into the new season.

Last season, Barcelona defeated Real Madrid in every clásico encounter, a total of four times, with two of those being cup finals that Barcelona won.

The Catalans ended the season with a domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, while Madrid finished trophyless.

Gavi said that record has understandably unsettled their biggest rivals.

“Of course they’re worried,” Gavi told Diario AS. “We won four out of four clasicos and that’s never happened before. It’s logical that they’re worried. At the end of the day, we were spectacular last season and they didn’t win anything.”

Madrid are also going through something of a rebuild with new manager Xabi Alonso arriving at the club this summer and aiming to remould the squad into his image.

It has been a mixed start for the Spaniard, with Madrid struggling through the Club World Cup in the United States this summer before finally getting dumped out by Paris Saint-Germain in emphatic fashion.

Barcelona have made three additions to last season’s squad. Marcus Rashford arrived on loan from Manchester United, with an option to buy next summer, and goalkeeper Joan Garcia was signed from local rivals Espanyol. Both are the senior additions. Teenager Roony Bardghji also joined from FC Copenhagen.

Gavi said: “Garcia and Rashford will contribute a lot. Roony is also doing quite well. I hope they give us their best so we can win all the titles. I’m happy with Marcus’ arrival because he’s an impressive player.”
