Forward’s injury setback puts him at risk of dropping further out of favour

Real Madrid forward Endrick is expected to be sidelined until at least mid-September after suffering an injury setback.

Endrick had been recovering from a right hamstring injury sustained in May against Sevilla. He made considerable progress and even trained with the rest of the team during Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign in the United States.

But then the player suffered a recurrence of the problem earlier this month. Sources close to the club have now confirmed initial fears that he will miss the start of the new La Liga campaign.

Medical staff at the club expect the Brazilian to be out for between eight and ten weeks. He will miss league fixtures against Osasuna, Real Oviedo, Mallorca and Real Sociedad.

Endrick’s injury setback puts him at risk of dropping further out of favour at the club. The player struggled for game time last season, mostly starting on the bench and playing less than 400 minutes in La Liga all season.

That problem has been compounded by the emergence of Gonzalo Garcia, who impressed at the Club World Cup, finishing as top scorer. Endrick’s spell on the sidelines could allow the Spaniard time to entrench himself in the squad next season.
