Real Madrid are considering terminating the contract of Brazilian youngster Reinier Jesus, five years after signing the midfielder for €30m.

The 23-year-old has not made a single appearance for Madrid’s first team since arriving from Flamengo in January 2020.

He is far down the pecking order for new manager Xabi Alonso, and with no transfer interest on the table the club are prepared to release him even before his contract expires in 2026.

Reinier was signed as one of Brazil’s most promising young players, following Madrid’s model of bringing the best young Brazilian talent to the Spanish capital.

But Reinier has failed to live up to that potential, instead spending most of the past five years on loan to Borussia Dortmund, Girona, Frosinone and most recently Granada, but without establishing himself at any of those clubs.

Alonso does not have Reinier in his plans for the upcoming season, and the club do not want him to return to Castilla, so they are ready to part ways.

Madrid had initially hoped to recoup some of their investment through a permanent transfer this summer, but no offers have arrived for Reinier.

His wages are modest by the club’s standards, so terminating his contract is feasible. It would allow him to leave on a free transfer and seek opportunities elsewhere, either in Europe or potentially back in Brazil.
