Deal for Mbeumo included a guaranteed £65m with a further £6m in add-ons
Manchester United are close to finalising the signing of Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, with the deal now in its final stages and the player expected to join the club’s pre-season tour of the United States next week.
Mbeumo has completed his medical and agreed personal terms on a long-term contract. A signing and official announcement are expected to follow in the coming days.
United reached a breakthrough in negotiations with Brentford last Friday after weeks of discussions, settling on a deal worth a guaranteed £65m to be paid in four instalments.
A further £6m in performance-based add-ons could take the total fee to £71m.
The add-ons are understood to be based on fairly achievable benchmarks, including appearances and goals in the Premier League, making it likely that Brentford will eventually receive the full amount.
United pursued Mbeumo for over a month, with two separate bids turned down. Tottenham Hotspur were also interested, as new manager and Mbeumo’s former coach Thomas Frank was keen on a reunion in north London.
However, the player made it clear he favoured a move to Old Trafford.
Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon are three of United’s summer signings so far expected to head Stateside with Amorim’s squad.
United will depart for the US on Tuesday, with fixtures lined up against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton over the next couple of weeks.
