England U-21 captain is open to leaving the Etihad after struggling for consistent minutes last season

James McAtee is exploring a move away from Manchester City this summer, with Eintracht Frankfurt emerging as a possible destination for the midfielder’s signature.

The 22-year-old travelled to Germany this week for face-to-face discussions with Frankfurt officials, as the Bundesliga side look to bolster their midfield ahead of their return to the Champions League next season.

The meeting will only involve talks and a chance for the City academy graduate to look around the club’s facilities, with no formal agreement yet in place and no medical scheduled.

McAtee has grown increasingly open to leaving the Etihad in search of regular first-team football after he struggled for consistent minutes last season. He was not included in City’s Club World Cup squad, although this was largely because he was on international duty at the 2025 Euro Championship in Slovakia, captaining the England U-21s at the competition. City have placed a £25m valuation on the midfielder.

McAtee could become the latest in a line of England youth internationals to move to Germany’s top flight in search of regular football, following the likes of Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham and, most recently, Jobe Bellingham.

The player’s stock is currently high after leading the England U-21s to victory at the European Championship. He was named Player of the Match for his performance in in midfield as Lee Carsley’s side beat Germany 3-2 in Bratislava.
