Inter Milan Crash Out From Club World Cup At The Hands of Fluminense

Inter Milan crashed out of the FIFA Club World Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Fluminense in the round of 16.

For Inter Milan fans, it was not the day the ending they hoped for. After fighting rigorously to come out of the group stage in the Club World Cup, Inter Milan faced a domineering Fluminese in the round of 16.

Inter Milan haven’t been at their best in the Club World Cup and today, their flaws were exposed. Fluminense were the better team and deservedly got the 2-0 win over the Nerazzurri.

Fluminense went ahead after a defensive lapse from the Inter Milan defense and from there, it was a slippery slope. Fluminense set up a defensive wall which rendered Inter’s effort fruitless despite multiple tries. 44-year old Fabio was solid in the post from start to finish as he frustrated the Nerazzurri frontline.

Inter came close through Dimarco, Martinez and De Vrij but it wasn’t just their day. De Vrij’s effort was their best on the night but the defender who found himself in front of the box was unable to tap the ball into the net from a few millimetres.

Inter missed a lot of chances in front of goal and they paid for it in the dying minutes of the game. Fluminense had tested Sommer a few times and in the 3rd minute of added time, the Brazilians made it 2-0. Hercules ripped a shot from a quick counter into the bottom corner. The Inter defense could only watch as the ball rolled past Sommer. At that moment, they knew it was over. Fluminense had condemned the Nerazzurri to a harsh reality. The Brazilians went through to the quarter-finals off the back of a gruelling victory to cause another upset in the Club World Cup.
