Inter Milan takes on Fluminense in the Club World Cup round of 16, looking to book their place in the quarterfinals with a win.
Inter Milan is set to face Fluminense in the Club World Cup round of 16, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.
The Nerazzurri, now led by former player Cristian Chivu after Simone Inzaghi’s departure to Al Hilal, have shown signs of continuity despite the change in leadership. Inter has performed well in the tournament so far, with their 2-0 victory over River Plate being a highlight.
Fluminense, on the other hand, has extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine games and was impressive in their opening fixture against Borussia Dortmund. The Brazilian side qualified for the knockout stage with a 4-2 win over Ulsan HD and will look to cause an upset against the UEFA Champions League finalists.
Inter’s Marcus Thuram is expected to return to the squad after struggling with a thigh injury, and Francesco Esposito’s performance against River Plate may convince Chivu to retain him alongside Lautaro Martínez up front. Davide Frattesi could get a start in midfield, while Petar Sučić may play his way into the starting XI.
Fluminense’s Thiago Silva is expected to be fit to face Inter, but Renato Gaúcho has Ignácio waiting in the wings. Jhon Arias has been excellent in the tournament so far and will be Fluminense’s chief threat in attack. Recent addition Yeferson Soteldo could be fit to play a part, while Otavio remains out of action for the Brazilians.
The predicted lineups for both teams are:
Inter Milan: Sommer; Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Sučić, Frattesi, Dimarco; Esposito, Martínez
Fluminense: Fabio; Xavier, Silva, Freytes, Renê; Hércules, Martinelli; Arias, Nonato, Canobbio; Everaldo
