Harvey Elliott has impressed for England U21s in the Euro Championships but is eager for more minutes at club level

Liverpool could be on the verge of losing one of their most promising young talents, as Harvey Elliott draws ever closer to Anfield exit in order to get regular playing time.

The 22-year-old is currently starring for England at the U21 Euros in Slovakia, scoring four goals so far with a brace in the 2-1 win over the Netherlands on Wednesday to help the Young Lions reach the final.

Despite his talent, Elliott spent much of last season on the bench at Liverpool. A foot injury kept him out for several weeks, and when he returned to full fitness, he made just two Premier League starts, both coming after the title was already secured.

While he loves Liverpool, that lack of minutes has led Elliott to publicly question his future at the club.

“I don’t really want to be wasting years of my career because it’s a short career,” said Elliott. “You don’t know what’s going to happen. I need to reflect. I want to improve and be the best possible version of myself. If that’s to go somewhere else, then it’s a decision I’m going to have to make.”

The player is attracting interest from several clubs, including Premier League side Fulham, who sold him to Liverpool as a teenager for £4.3m.

England U21 manager Lee Carsley said that Elliott is “determined to play and get the minutes”, something Liverpool are unable to guarantee next season. Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and new £116 million signing Florian Wirtz are all ahead of him in the midfield pecking order.

While he could be nearing an exit this summer, Elliott has credited Liverpool for his development, saying the club is the reason why he has become a better player.

“Coming from Liverpool, there’s a lot of leaders in that team,” said Elliott. “Now it’s using my learning, using what I’ve seen the leaders at Liverpool do and how they construct the team. When times are tough, how they bring themselves back up and the team back up.”
