Transfer will be finalised after Jarell Quansah concludes the European U21 Championships with England
Liverpool have reached a full agreement with Bayer Leverkusen over the £34 million sale of Jarell Quansah, but the young defender will not complete the move until after his England U21 duties are finished.
Quansah has impressed at the European U21 Championship and is expected to start again in Wednesday’s semi-final clash with the Netherlands after helping England overcome Spain in the last round. Only once his international commitments are wrapped up will the transfer be finalised.
The deal includes a buy-back clause. The club are said to be proud of the young defender’s development and wanted to leave the door open for a possible return in the future.
Quansah’s exit means Liverpool could now push further into the market for a new central defender, and one name on the radar is Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. The Reds have tracked Guehi for some time, and his performances for England at senior level have only strengthened that interest.
However, any immediate deal for Guehi is considered difficult. The player is not expected to sign for any club without clear guarantees of regular play time – something Liverpool cannot easily promise given their current defensive options.
That said, Guehi’s name remains near the top of Liverpool’s list, and Quansah’s departure opens up the door for a possible move for the Palace captain.
Quansah’s move to Leverkusen continues a busy summer for the Premier League champions, who have already completed the signings of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, both interestingly from the same German club.
