Club’s leading scorer in 2024-25 may be unable to feature against Al-Hilal after missing Tuesday’s training due to ill-health

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe could miss his side’s Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal on Wednesday after falling ill with a fever.

The France captain was absent from training on Tuesday, putting a question mark on his availability for the match at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Madrid play in Group H against Al-Hilal, Pachuca and Salzburg, three teams expected to offer a fairly straightforward test for the Spanish giants. Which means that while new manager Xabi Alonso will be eager to start off on a positive note – the match against Al-Hilal being his first official game in charge of the squad – the club’s highest goalscorer in 2024-25 should not be sorely missed.

Other Madrid players who will be missing on Wednesday include Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, Eder Militao, and Ferland Mendy, all recently returning from long-term injuries and still under close observation. Rudiger had a surgery in April after suffering a partial tear of the external meniscus in his left knee. It is unclear whether he will participate at all in the tournament.
