Italy Name Gennaro Gattuso as Their New Head Coach

Gennaro Gattuso has been appointed as Italy’s new football coach, replacing Luciano Spalletti, with the goal of helping the team qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Gennaro Gattuso has been named Italy’s new coach, tasked with guiding the team through the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The 47-year-old former midfielder was part of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad and earned 73 caps for the national team. He replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was sacked after a 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat by Norway.

Gattuso’s appointment comes after a successful playing career with AC Milan, where he won the Serie A title and the Champions League twice.

As a coach, he has managed several clubs, including AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia, Marseille, and Hajduk Split, with notable achievements like winning the Coppa Italia with Napoli in 2020.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed Gattuso will be formally introduced to the media on Thursday.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina praised Gattuso, saying, “Gattuso is a true symbol of Italian football. His passion, professionalism, and experience will be crucial.” With Italy struggling to qualify for major tournaments, Gattuso’s challenge is to restore the team’s success and lead them to the 2026 World Cup.
