Former Chelsea player Claude Makelele believes Mike Maignan is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and should be signed by Chelsea.
Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has expressed his support for the Blues to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, whom he considers one of the best in the world. Makelele believes Maignan would be a valuable addition to Chelsea’s squad, particularly in their pursuit of major trophies.
Chelsea have already made a signing this summer, bringing in Liam Delap from Ipswich for £30m.
However, the Blues are expected to make further additions, with a versatile forward, centre-back, and left winger being top priorities. A new goalkeeper is also high on the agenda, given the uncertainty between the posts last season.
Maignan’s potential transfer to Chelsea was previously explored, but the Blues were unwilling to meet Milan’s valuation of £20-25m, instead valuing the goalkeeper at £12.6m.
According to reports, Chelsea may return for Maignan if Milan are willing to lower their asking price, although the Blues are said to have other goalkeepers on their radar.
Makelele emphasized the importance of a top-class goalkeeper in winning trophies, citing Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as an example. “Maignan is one of the best in the world right now, and if Chelsea can take him, it’s better,” he said.
The Frenchman believes Chelsea need to strengthen their squad in several areas to compete for the Champions League and Premier League next season. Along with a goalkeeper, Makelele identifies a striker and winger as key positions that need to be addressed.
