Ancelotti took over as Brazil’s coach after leaving Real Madrid, but his tenure started with a draw against Ecuador in the World Cup qualifiers.
Carlo Ancelotti’s reign as Brazil boss got off to a lackluster start as his team was held to a 0-0 draw away at Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying. The five-time World Cup winners struggled to break down a resolute Ecuador defense, with Flamengo midfielder Gerson coming closest to scoring.
Ecuador’s best opportunity came towards the end of the first half when Venezia forward John Yeboah’s header went agonizingly over the bar.
Brazil pushed for a winner, but goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle saved well from Manchester United midfielder Casemiro. The result leaves Brazil in fourth place in the qualifying group with 22 points after 15 matches.
The draw means Ecuador remains in second place with 24 points, 10 points behind leaders Argentina.
Brazil will look to bounce back in their next qualifying match, while Ecuador will aim to build on their solid defensive performance. The top six teams in the table will automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
With several matches still to play, Brazil and Ecuador will be keenly aware of the importance of every point in the qualifying campaign.
A strong finish to the group stage could make all the difference in securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
