Enrique says tribute left him “very emotional”; fans unfurled a banner showing special moment with daughter in 2015

Paris Saint-Germain supporters paid tribute to coach Luis Enrique’s late daughter, Xana, who died in 2019 from a rare form of bone cancer, amid the celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain’s first-ever Champions League title.

At full-time after the win over Inter Milan in Munich, supporters in the PSG end unveiled a tifo depicting Enrique with his daughter, recreating a special moment they shared after he won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015.

The tifo showed Luis and Xana planting a flag in the pitch. That day in 2015, little Xana had come onto the pitch waving a huge flag as Barcelona celebrated. Enrique referenced the memory in his post-match comments, saying the tribute was “very emotional.”

“It was very emotional with the banner from the fans for my family,” said Enrique. “But I always think about my daughter. It means a lot. It’s so nice but I don’t need to win the Champions league to remember my daughter.

“My daughter is always with us, especially when we lost. With my family, enjoying everything and trying to get the positives, even in the bad moments.”

Saturday’s win marked the first time PSG have won the Champions League, having previously fallen short despite years of heavy investment and a series of high-profile managers.
