Manchester United captain has been linked with an exit from Old Trafford
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has firmly stated that Bruno Fernandes is not for sale, after interest from several clubs including Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.
Fernandes has been presented with a lucrative offer from Al-Hilal reportedly worth £700,000 per week tax-free over three years, totalling around £200 million. Al-Hilal have also proposed a transfer fee of approximately £100 million to Manchester United, dependent on Fernandes agreeing to personal terms.
Despite the financial allure of the offer due to United’s financial situation, Amorim believes Fernandes is too important to the team to be sold.
“You can see by the performance, the leadership, the passion he has for the games,” said Amorim. “So it is really important, especially in these kind of moments.
“You could see that in the last game. I felt that the team was without pressure; they performed quite well and everybody wanted the ball.”
Fernandes, who joined Manchester United in January 2020, has practically carried the club on his back in terms of creative output. In the just-concluded season, he scored 19 goals and provided 20 assists across all competitions.
His contract with United runs until 2027, with an option for an additional year. However, the player himself has speculated on his own future recently, saying that he would leave United if “the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in”.
United are currently undergoing a significant overhaul following a disappointing season. Amorim is leading a summer rebuild, with plans to invest an available £100 million in new signings, including Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Additional investment would require sales, but Amorim believes the club cannot afford to include Fernandes in that reckoning.
“The team has different moments and in different moments, Bruno [Fernandes] is the one who really wants to take responsibility,” said Amorim. “He should be because he is the captain, so he’s really important for us and really important for what we want to build with this team.”
