Araujo dropped down the pecking order in Flick’s squad this season, with Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez preferred
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has said that Ronald Araujo remains part of his plans going into next season. Injuries and the performance of other key players have kept him out but he has a chance to contribute to the squad next season.
“I’m counting on Araujo for next season,” said Flick ahead of Barcelona’s final game of the season against Athletic Club in Bilbao.
“He has a contract, so why not? I’m happy with him. He had a difficult season because of injuries and the good form of Cubarsi and Inigo.”
The Uruguayan defender has endured a season with fitness issues, but poor form has also helped to push him down the pecking order.
Araujo was heavily blamed for the loss to Inter in the Champions League semi-final, ultimately facing online harassment that affected even his family. Yet despite speculation over a summer exit, he may just have a chance to prove his worth next season.
