Fernandes loves the club but will leave if the hierarchy feels that it is “time to part ways”
Manchester United are preparing for a big summer of incomings and exits under head coach Ruben Amorim, and Bruno Fernandes could be the biggest name to leave.
Sources close to Old Trafford say the club are willing to entertain offers for the 30-year-old captain in order to raise funds for reinvestment back into the squad. The Portuguese international, who has practically carried United on his back since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, is drawing serious interest from up to 10 different clubs, according to the Independent.
Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are two of the most prominent clubs in the frame. PSG, whose admiration for Fernandes dates back at least two years, tried to secure a deal for him last summer. Their efforts prompted United to offer Fernandes a contract extension, which he signed in August 2024, keeping him at the club until 2027.
But following United’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, which shattered their hopes of European competition next season, the club have lost potential Champions League revenue of up to £100 million.
United now find themselves needing to sell even high-value assets like Fernandes in order to fund a complete rebuild of their mismatched squad and mould it in the way Amorim wants to play.
Bayern remain keen on Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, but Liverpool have reportedly made serious progress towards signing the 22-year-old, which means that the German champions are no longer confident of landing him. Fernandes would be a welcome alternative due to his experience and obvious quality. At least seven other clubs in Europe are understood to be monitoring the situation.
Another club maintaining interest in Fernandes is Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, who made a proposal for the player in January. Fernandes wants to continue playing for United as he loves the club clearly, but he is also eager to see the club rebuilt even if that means leaving Old Trafford himself.
Following the loss in Bilbao, Fernandes made his position clear in the media.
“I have always been honest,” said the Portuguese. “If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it’s what it is. Football sometimes is like this.
“I’ve always said I will be here until the club says to me that it’s time to go. I’m eager to do more, to be able to bring the club to the great days.
“The day that the club thinks that I’m too much or it’s time to part ways, football is like this, you never know it. But I’ve always said it and I keep my word in the same way.”
