Ipswich striker risks being overwhelmed by the pressures of playing for a top club, says Liverpool legend

Pundit Jamie Carragher has warned Liam Delap over his potential transfer to Manchester United, cautioning that the young striker could face the same pitfalls as others who made the leap too soon.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Liverpool defender drew comparisons to Rasmus Hojlund, United’s current leading man up front, who has struggled to consistently deliver under the pressure of leading the line at one of the world’s most scrutinised football clubs.

“I don’t think Delap should go to Man United,” Carragher said. “What happened to [Rasmus] Hojlund, sometimes when you’re going from a team who have been relegated. I know Man United are 16th, but they are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the eyes and ears on them. I think that’s such a big step.

“I know people might say it’s not in terms of league position, but Man United are a monster.”

Delap, who has impressed with his performances at Ipswich Town, is on the radar for many top clubs, including Chelsea and Arsenal, although United are reportedly in prime position to sign him. It is understood that the 22-year-old has spoken face to face with club executives after being granted permission by Ipswich to travel to Manchester this week.

While Carragher did admit he sees Delap as an improvement on Hojlund, he believes a move to a club with slightly less pressure would serve him better in the short term.

“I do [think he’s an upgrade on Hojlund], but I almost think that next step should be Everton or something,” said Carragher. “You know you’re going to play every week, you’re going to be the main man, you’re going to feel like one of the best players in the team.

“He’s the best player in the team at Ipswich, everything goes through him, so go to another club where you’re that for two years, then go to Man United or wherever, a team playing in the Champions League or trying to compete at that sort of level.”
