Just a few months ago, Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of securing a Champions League spot seemed bleak. Sitting in 11th place in the Bundesliga and faced with inconsistent performances, Dortmund faced mounting pressure to live up to their regular standards.

With the challenges the club faced, Dortmund made a managerial change in February, bringing in Niko Kovač.

Under Kovač’s leadership, Dortmund embarked on an impressive run, winning six of their last seven matches. This late-season surge ended in a decisive 3-0 victory over already-relegated Holstein Kiel on the final day, securing fourth place and a coveted Champions League spot for the 2025/26 season. The win was not just about points; it showed the team’s resilience and determination to perform at their very best.

The match against Kiel capped Dortmund’s newfound form. Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring early with a penalty, marking his 21st goal in his debut season, a remarkable feat for any player.

Kiel’s Carl Johansson received a red card, reducing his team to ten men and further tilting the balance in Dortmund’s favour. Marcel Sabitzer and Felix Nmecha added goals in the second half, sealing the comprehensive win.

Kovač’s impact on the team has been nothing short of incredible. Since his appointment, Dortmund has collected 22 out of a possible 24 points in their final eight games, a turnaround hailed as one of the greatest coaching achievements in the club’s history.

Club officials and players alike have praised Kovač’s emphasis on discipline, clear tactical guidance, and his ability to instill confidence in the squad.

This qualification marks Dortmund’s 11th consecutive appearance in the Champions League, providing the club with financial stability and a platform to attract top talent. With the Club World Cup in the U.S. on the horizon and a new Bundesliga season ahead, Dortmund look set to continue this fine form and compete with the best clubs in Europe.
