Pundit says United’s plans show “a bit of arrogance” that does not tally with their present situation

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has criticised Manchester United for the club’s reported decision not to do a trophy parade if they win the Europa League, but instead do a small private barbecue attended only by players and staff.

Ruben Amorim’s side earned their spot in the final after a 7-1 aggregate semi-final victory over Athletic Club, and now face Spurs in Bilbao to claim the European prize.

United’s reasons for a private barbecue are unclear, but possible ones include a tight post-season schedule, and the sense that it is incongruous to hold an open-top bus parade when the club are marooned in 16th place and set to have their worst season   since 1974.

But Paul Merson believes that United are trivialising an important moment they may not experience for a while.

“The trophies do not come thick and fast,” Merson said. “Man Utd are a million miles off. Enjoy it while you can.

“For me, it’s a bit of arrogance. Winning trophies was the past, so enjoy the present. Who says they win another one for 15 years?”

“Now they’re going to have a BBQ, think of the fans! They’ll let you know when the parade is on whether it was right to do. Do not leave the fans out because it is about the fans. I would want a parade.

“They could win a trophy and if they win it, they have won more than Arsenal. Arsenal would love to have a parade. It is hard to win trophies, so do not underestimate winning one. It is difficult.”
